One little weekend advertising announcement in the papers and Fox Theater phones began chiming. Elvis Presley, top pop, rock 'n' roll and hillybilly singer-guitarist, has been booked onto the Fox for one day only, Friday, May 25, for three personal appearances at 6, 7, and 9:45 p.m.

Presley is going to be a movie star, too. Paramount producer Hal Wallis, who has always had a sharp eye for comers, has engaged Cy Howard to write an original screenplay for Presley's screen debut.

"All that is known about the project at present is that it will be a musical with a college background," reports Thomas M. Pryor, New York Times news service man on the coast. So far only the hep known about Presley.

IN A year and a helf or so this 21-year-old native of Tupelo, MS, has become such a sensation that just recently Presley outdrew his Las Vegas competitionm, Johnnie Ray.

Presley's first appearance was at the age of 13 at the Tri-State fair in Tupelo. Just for fun, when he was in high school in Memphis, he made a recording of a song called "That's All Right, Mama." Nothing came of that.

Out of high school, Presley became a trunck driver and began to take professional engagements on the side. Col. Tom Parker is now his personal manager with a success on his hands.

Presley specializes in what might be called blue ballads Southern and Western style. His vocalizing has been described as a "plaintive wail." He plays the guitar too, as did uncles before him

TIRED and yawning between performances, the 21-year-old hillbilly blues singer said he is as amazed as anyone over his tremendous success. In less than six months, bobby-soxers have bought more than five million recordings by the former truck driver from Memphis, Tenn.

A modest, good-looking youth who does not drink or smoke, Presley described it all as a "dream come true"

"I never was a lady killer in high school," he said. "I had my share of dates - but that's all."

"I'D LIKE to take 'em all for a ride in my new car," he said. He owns four Cadillacs. Ernestine Waynick, 14, of 428 Heidt, was typical of the teen-agers in the audience.

"Wow," she said. "I like his actions."

She said she ran errands and turned in pop-bottles to save $4.50. That's the price for the three performances.
